Helicopter Transfers to St. Barts: Is It Worth It?

Helicopter Transfers to St. Barts

A helicopter to St. Barts costs more, carries fewer people, and won’t fit much luggage. So why choose it? For most travelers, a regional turboprop makes more sense. But if you miss a connection, arrive later, or just have no interest in waiting around at SXM, you have to reconsider some of your options. Here’s what you can expect. The helicopter transfer is the most scenic way to get to St Barts.

How Does a Helicopter Transfer to St. Barts Work?

The standard St Barts helicopter transfer is the Airbus AS 350 B2, a single-engine aircraft carrying up to 5 passengers. Some operators also use twin-engine options, such as the Eurocopter AS 355-N.

These transfers are usually short. Helicopter St Martin to St Barts – 10 minutes. St. Thomas – 11 minutes. Saba – 16 minutes. Nevis – 25 minutes. St. Croix – 30 minutes. Antigua – 35 minutes. Tortola – 50 minutes.

As for baggage, you’re usually allowed to have up to 4 suitcases and 5 carry-on bags. Very large suitcases are not recommended.

Most operators don’t have fixed schedules and operate fully on demand. They adapt the flight to your commercial or private plane’s landing time at SXM, with a VIP meet-and-greet included at St Barts airport. Book directly or through a concierge service, such as the one we provide at Villa Nyx.

If conditions are unfavorable, flights to St Barts are postponed or even canceled. Always have a backup plan, such as a turboprop or a ferry.

Helicopter Operators for St. Barts

  • West Indies Helicopters. Based in St. Martin, offering private transfers across the Caribbean – St. Barts, Anguilla, Antigua, St. Kitts, Saba, Nevis, Tortola, and more. AOC-certified, available 24/7, transfer up to 5 passengers. Also does sightseeing tours, aerial photography, and film shoots. Book via westindieshelico.com.
  • St. Barth Commuter. Best known for fixed-wing scheduled and charter flights, but also coordinates St Barts helicopter transfers as part of its VIP service. Useful if you want a single operator to handle the entire transfer.
  • Premium IV Concierge & Other Operators. Premium IV operates a helicopter service from both SXM and Grand Case, timing departures to match your incoming flight. Similar full-service options are available through St. Barth R Way (15+ years in St. Barts), Bailey Inc Services (EASA-certified, Grand Case Airport, 20,000+ flight hours since 2004, AS355N twin-engine for up to 5 passengers), AirSXM, and Fivestars St. Barth. They can all handle ground coordination, meet-and-greet, and baggage to make your arrival easier.

What to Know Before You Book

  • Capacity. 3-5 passengers, depending on the aircraft. Not suitable for large groups.
  • Luggage. Small carry-on baggage and up to 4 compact bags. No large suitcases, surfboards, or sports equipment. Confirm the exact policy when booking.
  • Schedule. Fully on-demand with no fixed timetables. Coordinate your departure well in advance, especially during peak season (December-April). SBH airport runs 8 am-6 pm, so your arrival in St. Barts must be timed properly.
  • Cost. Helicopters are significantly more expensive than regional jets. A one-way charter from SXM to SBH runs around €1,150 in low season, and higher during peak dates. That’s for the whole aircraft, not per person, so groups of 4-5 can split the cost meaningfully. Some operators charge an additional setup fee if the helicopter isn’t already positioned at your departure airport. You can also reserve a transfer just for yourself, if you want to enjoy the beauty in peace.
  • Fear of the runway. For anyone nervous about the famous hill approach at Gustaf III, the helicopter is a perfect alternative because it lands directly on the helipad, bypassing the runway entirely.
  • Book early for high season. Helicopter transfers are particularly useful if all scheduled aircraft are already booked or your inbound flight arrives too late for a standard charter.
